SilverLining engages with the research community, policymakers, technologists, civil society and people from all walks of life to help advance research and innovation in efforts to ensure a safe climate.
TEAM
Alex leads research efforts at SilverLining under the Safe Climate Research Initiative and provides extensive input to SilverLining's science policy efforts. Previously, Alex was a consultant for the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) in program design and strategy. Alex worked with the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) to fund the first full-scope global climate model simulations of atmospheric climate intervention, the Geoengineering Large Ensemble (GLENS). Alex has worked with a variety of clients in the R&D and government innovation ecosystem to develop and demonstrate new analysis and technology capabilities.
ALICIA KARSPECK, PhD,
Director of Earth Information Programs
Alicia leads SilverLining's efforts to accelerate climate prediction and observation and including industry partnerships. She is a climate risk consultant, co-founder of SK Analytics, and climate-tech advisor. Alicia has previously held numerous leadership roles at climate and financial risk firms. She is trained as a climate scientist and spent over a decade at the National Center for Atmospheric Research conducting research on seasonal to decadal climate prediction and global coupled data assimilation. Alicia serves on scientific working groups and has published widely in academic journals and in the popular media.
LINDA HEDGES, PhD,
Scientific High Performance Computing Expert
Previously a High Performance Computing Specialist with Amazon Web Services, Linda developed best-practices for scalable, cost-effective, and reliable cloud architectures at AWS. Her expertise centered on the development of methods for tightly-coupled HPC workloads. Before working on cloud architectures, she worked in Computational Fluid Dynamics analysis and automation in the aerospace industry, including positions at Stark Aerospace, Boeing Company and Blue Origin. Linda holds a PhD in Aeronautics and Astronautics from the University of Washington in 1991.
MADELEINE KARLSBERG SCHAFFER, Lead, Global Youth Initiative
Maddy leads SilverLining's efforts to engage young global climate cleaders on near-term climate risk and intervention. In addition to her work with SilverLining, Maddy is a Master of Science degree candidate in Governance of Sustainability at Leiden University in The Hague, The Netherlands. Previously, she was a researcher for Scottish Communities Climate Action Network (SCCAN) and a member of the grassroots pressure group Fossil Free Glasgow on a campaign that resulted in the University of Glasgow becoming the first academic institution in Europe to divest from fossil fuels. She holds a First Class Honours degree in Geography (BSc) from the University of Glasgow.>>
AARUSHI SHAH, Research and Communications Fellow
Aarushi helps with SilverLining's research, policy and communications efforts. Prior to SilverLining, Aarushi interned at S4S Technologies, a Mumbai based AgriTech startup working toward reducing food wastage in the agricultural supply chain. She completed her undergraduate degree at Georgetown Univerisity. She studied Economics, Business Administration and STIA (Science, Technology and International Affairs) with a concentration in Energy and Environment. Aarushi also manages a blog dedicated to the latest news and developments in environmental sustainability.
SAMUEL KAUFMANN,
Research Fellow
Sam supports SilverLining's research and science policy work. His previous experience includes co-creating the Climate Security Mapping Project at Perry World House, working in the Abdus-Saboor behavioral neuroscience lab and staffing the offices of PA representative Steve Samuelson and state senator Lisa Boscola. He holds a B.A. in Biology from the University of Pennsylvania.

Joshua is a climate advocate focused on climate change adaptation and disaster risk reduction. He is the founder of Green Africa Youth Organization (GAYO) and the lead author of ‘Adapt for Our Future’ - the first background paper on Youth and Climate Adaptation. He supported the Global Center on Adaptation to establish a Global Youth Adaptation Network to provide knowledge and opportunities to accelerate adaptation to future climate risks. He has extensive experience supporting public and private institutions in climate strategies. He served as an advisor to the UN Youth Envoy’s Office in the delivery of the first UN Youth Climate Summit. He is a Board Member of Gamma Energie and Regional Advisor for the Global Alliance for Incinerator Alternatives in Africa.
NEESHAD SHAFI,
International Strategy Fellow
Neeshad is an environmentalist and advocates best known for his work on the youth climate movement and environmental and climate policies in the Middle East. He is Co-founder & Executive Director at the Arab Youth Climate Movement Qatar and a Board Member at Climate Action Network (CAN) Arab World and CoalitionWILD. He is on the steering committee of Global Shapers Climate and Environment; UNESCO Youth Climate Action Network (YoU-CAN) and UNEP Youth Regional Facilitator for the Middle East. He holds a master’s degree in Environmental Engineering and based in Doha, Qatar. He also a Non-Resident Fellow at the Middle East Institute (MEI). In March 2019, he was named in the Apolitical’s List of the 100 Most Influential People in Climate Policy 2019.
RICARDO PINEDA GUZMÁN, International Strategy Fellow
Ricardo Pineda Guzmán is a Sustainable Development Engineer and decarbonization specialist from Honduras. He was named by the United Nations as one of the 100 Young Climate Champions in 2019, and a Young Leader for Development EDD21 by the European Commission. He has served as a climate negotiator for Honduras towards the United Nations Framework on Climate Change, and now coordinates the adaptation component of the National Decarbonization Strategy of Honduras. Currently, he is the director of Sustenta Honduras, the first non-govermental organization focused on Action for Climate Empowerment (ACE) and climate adaptation in the country. He is also a Global Strategy Youth Fellow at SilverLining.
Nico Esguerra joins SilverLining to lead international policy and coalition efforts. A recent Masters graduate from the Yale Jackson School of Foreign Affairs, Nico previously worked in disaster relief and communications for civil society organizations and convening on climate change and African affairs for the US federal government and the UN.

Cassandra Forrester joins SilverLining as Operations Manager based at our headquarters in Washington DC. Cassandra was previously the executive coordinator for National Operations at Clark Construction Group and an event planner for the External Affairs team at The Carlyle Group.
